Two Candidates (and more) in 2018!

Dear Green Party Representative.
There are many important developments in this Report, but first I have to urge you to attend our February Membership Meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 22. At this meeting, Green Party of Philadelphia (GPOP) members will elect our 2018 City Committee (think “steering committee”). It will be your opportunity to decide on the direction of our political party.
In this Report, I will bring you – and the other 18 Green Party Representatives up to date on the many developments since Report #1, which I posted to your Inbox at the turn of the New Year. We are definitely starting 2018 with a BANG!

Task: Recruit Green Party Candidates
This has been most exciting! The Green Party now has two members who will be seeking our endorsement to run for office in 2018. The most advanced candidacy is that of Neal Gael (Montgomery County) who has filed his Request for Endorsement with GPPA Green Wave. Once reviewed, Green Wave will transmit it to the GPPA Steering Committee. Hopefully, Neal’s endorsement will be decided at our Delegates Meeting in Scranton on March 18.
But that’s not all! We now have a new Philadelphia Green Party member who has expressed interest in running for U.S. Congress in PA District 1. You will be able to meet Robert Kalalian at the February GPOP Meeting. Robert is pulling together a campaign committee. If you want to join it, I will give you Robert’s contact information.
We are still searching for people from Philadelphia to run in 2018 as Green Party candidates for PA State Representative. It is one of our tasks to convince good activists to run for office as Green Party candidates seeking single-payer healthcare, reparations for slavery, an end to fracking, a basic universal income, and an end mass incarceration.
Please send me the contact information for prospective Green Party candidates, and I will help you to convince them to run.

Task: Organize Campaign Workers
We have taken the first step in supporting our 2018 candidates, but we still have a way to go. At the present, we have nine Green Party Representatives who have volunteered to collect voter’s signatures during the Primary Election. There are also two Green Party Representatives who cannot volunteer on 5/15, but who have offered to collect nomination signatures at other times.
Green Party Representatives can begin collecting voter’s signatures on our Nomination Papers on March 8, but the best time to collect signatures will be at your polling place during the Primary Election on Tuesday, May 15. Of course, we need more than 11 Green Party Representatives working on this project. Please let me know if you or any of your friends will help us to get Green Party candidates on the ballot.

Task: Build an Infrastructure to Win Elections
One of the most active elements of our infrastructure is GPPA Green Wave, which did a fantastic job during 2017. With Green Wave support, 12 Greens won election last year, making PA the state with the second largest number of elected Greens. GPOP still needs a Green Wave Organizer for Philadelphia. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering.
The GPOP membership has now created three Working Groups to assist you in building the Green Party. In addition to the EOW Group which was initiated in September 2015, our membership created an Outreach Working Group in July 2016, and a Communications Working Group in September 2017. Please consider joining one of these groups because they all need volunteers. Interested? If so, I will gladly send you the proper contact information.

City Committee Elections
At the GPOP February Membership Meeting on Thursday, February 22, Green Party members will elect our 2018 City Committee. There are seven elected offices on our City Committee and nine members have been nominated. Please consider nominating yourself for the City Committee. If you would like more information, please contact me or read the section of the GPOP Bylaws on “City Committee” (Paragraph IV) and “Election of Officers and Delegates” (Paragraph VIII).

Please let me know what you have been doing to build the Green Party.

It is Good to be Green,
Chris Robinson, 215-843-4256
Membership Secretary
Green Party of Philadelphia

PS: Members of the GPOP EOW Group are called “Green Party Representatives.” According to a motion approved by the GPOP membership on September 30, 2015, the EOW Group has three tasks: “recruiting Green Party candidates who will campaign for office; organizing people to work on those campaigns; and building an infrastructure that will be able to win electoral campaigns.”
