Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein Arrested at “Occupy Fannie Mae” Protest in Center City Philadelphia

Germantown resident Rhonda Lancaster speaks about the foreclosure of her home.

Rhonda Lancaster was one of the first to speak at yesterday’s “Occupy Fannie Mae” event, a Green Party-sponsored sit-in at the Fannie Mae office in Center City to protest unjust home foreclosures. Lancaster, a musician and fitness instructor, has been dealing with foreclosure since 2009, when her mother passed away shortly after signing a reverse mortgage on their Germantown home. Thus far, she’s managed to fight off the banks; she’s even met with the president of Fannie Mae during her process, and says she’s been in discussions to buy back her home for a negotiated price. “We hope to use this as a litmus test for all the other folks who are going through this process,” Lancaster told a crowd of about 50 protesters and activists. “Because the bottom line is, when you don’t know how the process works, you’re basically swatting in the dark at flies.” (more…)

At Green Night Out on July 21, Dr. Walter Tsou, former Philadelphia Commissioner of Health, discussed “Single-Payer Healthcare after the Supreme Court Decision.”

Tsou explained to the diners, “The Supreme Court decision will have little effect on our struggle for single-payer healthcare, also called ‘Improved Medicare-for-All.’ We need single-payer healthcare if our nation is to solve the three major problems of the economy, unemployment and the deficit.” (more…)

The meeting began promptly at 7:00 pm at the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association,, 700 North Third Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
Facilitated by Carol McLean, GPOP membership secretary.
Minutes were taken by Hillary Kane because Dave Butler arrived late and left early.

Welcome to Northern Liberties by Vivek Ananthan, chair of GPOP. Vivek described how Northern Liberties was one of the earliest European settlements in North America. He said, “The first Red-White treaty was signed here in 1682.” Vivek has lived in Northern Liberties since 1984.Vivek Ananthan and Esther Croft (Ward 5); John Barry (Montgomery Co.), Dave Butler and Bernadette Cronin-Geller (Ward 21), Alex Gillett and Hillary Kane (Ward 46) and her friend Anne Schwieger; Richard Kanegis (Ward 8), Carol McLean and Chris Robinson (Ward 59), Charles Sherrouse (Ward 54), and Jerry Taylor (Bucks Co.).
