Volunteer for Special Election on March 21
Well, this has already been an exciting year, and we are only one-twelfth engrossed. On January 16, Green Party of Philadelphia (GPOP) members participated in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Protest, and on January 20 and 21, they participated in Occupy the Inauguration and the Women’s March for Justice. Green Party participation in these three events was organized by the GPOP Outreach Working Group.
On January 25, GPOP members endorsed Cheri Honkala (Fairhill) to run in a special election for PA Representative in District 197. Our Outreach Working Group then held a Welcome Party for New Greens on February 4, and more than 40 people attended it.
You can learn more about our endorsement of Cheri Honkala by reading the News Release authored by GPOP Representative Margie Neary (Roxborough). This special election will take place on Tuesday, March 21, and I am urging you and our other Representatives to volunteer with me at the polls for Cheri’s Campaign. You may also volunteer for Cheri’s Campaign by contacting GPOP Representative Murielle McCarthy (Center City East).
Right now, we are looking forward to the Green Party internal election on February 22, in which our members will elect a new City Committee (think “steering committee”) for the coming year. The election of a new GPOP City Committee is important for our future organizing. There are six GPOP Representatives running for seats on our seven-person City Committee. Remember, they are still running for office, and they might not win without your vote. Also, the nominations for those offices are still open. So, please self-nominate if you are interested.
The rest of Report #1 (2017) will bring you up to date on what has happened since Report #19 (2016) which was posted to you on December 29.
Task: Organize Campaign Workers
It is still important for us to build our network of volunteers at the polling places. The primary election will take place on Tuesday, May 16. Please schedule that day off from work because your presence at the polls will be very important to our candidates (see below). During the primary, we will be collecting voters’ signatures on Nomination Papers for Green Party candidates. Your presence at the polls will give you access to a steady stream of voters, all of whom are potential signers. This is absolutely, the best location to get petitions completed.
Task: Build an Infrastructure to Win Elections
The GPOP Outreach Working Group has been carrying quite a load of work. They can use your help, if you are not already a member. Co-chaired by Representatives Margie Neary and Taj Magruder (Point Breeze), the Group is now planning a film showing around mass incarceration. The Outreach Working Group can also use greater participation from those of you who have not actively participated.
Fortunately for the Green Party, Margie has been producing very nice News Releases. Her second, covering the endorsement of Cheri for State House, was approved by the City Committee and posted to the media on February 2.
We still need help with our website design, fundraising, and publication of a GPOP newsletter. If you are ready to take charge – or to help out – please let me know.
Task: Recruit Green Party Candidates
In addition to the special election discussed above, we are also preparing to run Green Party candidates in the General Election on November 7. The Green Party of Pennsylvania (GPPA) has already endorsed Montco Green Jules Mermelstein for PA Superior Court.
We will soon consider endorsing Sheila Ptah for Philadelphia Comptroller, and we have two candidates who will seek our endorsement for Inspector of Elections at their polling place.
This is why we need your help, along with the other Green Party Representatives, at the polls on primary day, May 16. It will be incumbent on us to collect enough signatures to get these Greens on the ballot.
I hope that you will continue to be active along with our other 28 Representatives. Please let me know how you plan to fit into our vigorous organizing.
It is Good to be Green,
Chris Robinson, 215-843-4256

PS: Members of the GPOP EOW Group are called “Green Party Representatives.” According to a motion approved by the GPOP membership on September 30, 2015, the EOW Group has three tasks: “recruiting Green Party candidates who will campaign for office; organizing people to work on those campaigns; and building an infrastructure that will be able to win electoral campaigns.”
