Drone War Research – Green Night Out12.09.12

Drone War Research on University Campuses

At Green Night Out on December 1, Marge Van Cleef led a discussion about drone war research on university campuses. Van Cleef, an organizer for Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, www.wilpfus.org, explained that drone warfare is targeted killing of people who have never been charged, tried or found guilty of any crime. Often, more people are killed by a drone than the person who is being targeted.

Van Cleef is currently organizing opponents of drone research on the campuses of University of Pennsylvania (UofP) and Drexel University. On the UofP campus, the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Laboratory is paid more than $10 million/year by the U.S. for research. One aspect of her organizing involves Death Walk vigils on the first Saturday of each month on the UofP campus. (more…)

GREEN NIGHT OUT: How to End Fracking11.18.12

GREEN NIGHT OUT: How to End Fracking

www.opednews.com/articles/How-to-End-Fracking-by-Chris-Robinson-121116-845.html

At Green Night Out on November 10, Sam Bernhardt, led a discussion about “How to End Fracking.” Bernhardt is an organizer for Food and Water Watch, www.foodandwaterwatch.org, in Pennsylvania. Fracking (hydraulic fracturing to release gas from shale rock) is inherently unsafe, according to Bernhardt, and citizens cannot rely on state officials to protect the water, air and public health. “Fracking can’t be made safer through government oversight or regulations,” said Bernhardt. “An all out ban on fracking is the only way to protect our communities.”

Right now, Bernhardt is working to expose the way PA Governor Tom Corbett has overreached to make gas drilling easier for the gas companies. He does not believe that most Pennsylvania residents will agree with the extremism of Corbett opening state college campuses and state forests for gas-drilling. Bernhardt also thinks that most people in our Commonwealth will object to Corbett deleting information from lab reports to people who have had their well water tested for toxic contaminants. (more…)
