Documentary Screening at Cheri 4 Sheriff Office09.27.11

Submitted by: Jason Bosch, Chief of Staff, Cheri 4 Sheriff Campaign

On Tuesday, September 27 at 7PM, we will be screening the documentary film, “Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai”. This is a powerful film about an incredible woman, who founded the Green Party in Kenya as well as the Green Belt Movement:  poor women planting trees. They’ve planted over a million trees since its founding and have had dramatic direct confrontations with the military, whose interest is protecting the logging industry. Sadly, Wangari passed away on Monday at the age of 71. Come to our campaign office at 718 Market St. to learn more about this incredible woman and celebrate the resistance that continues. The film screening will be free but donations to Cheri’s campaign are always welcome. Bring some snacks and refreshments. Here’s the film’s website: http://takingrootfilm.com/

      Cheri Honkala isn’t horsing around.
You might think otherwise, given that she appeared atop a magnificent brown horse on Monday, Aug. 29, trotting down Allegheny Avenue in Kensington.
In an attention-getting move that surely worked — and provided the gathered press with plenty of opportunities for horse puns — Green Party candidate for sheriff Honkala brought traffic to a standstill as children raced down the sidewalks to see the commotion. (more…)

On Friday, former Georgia Democratic State Representative Cynthia McKinney will be in town for an event sponsored by the Philadelphia International Action Center, at the Calvary Church at 48th and Baltimore. The focus of her appearance will be to speak of a delegation she recently led to Libya and to discuss what she and the IAC are calling “the U.S. criminal destruction of Libya .”

Her secondary reason for showing up in Philly: She’ll endorse Cheri Honkala, Green Party candidate for sheriff. “By refusing to throw people out of their homes, refusing to cooperate with ICE, and vowing to uphold the U.S. Constitution, Cheri Honkala seeks to restore the role of the Sheriff to that of a peace keeper, serving people over money,” McKinney said in a previous statement. “Cheri Honkala’s campaign for Sheriff of Philadelphia is the most significant move that is being made in America to challenge the out of control banks, and she deserves our support.” (more…)

By Angelo Fichera.

A few months after kick-starting her campaign, Cheri Honkala has filed nomination papers with the city, hoping to “keep families in their homes” if elected sheriff.

Honkala, the Green Party candidate for the position, says her team of volunteer supporters garnered 4,422 signatures endorsing her nomination, as of today. As an independent candidate, she was required to collect at least 1,845 signatures in order for her name to appear on the ballot.

“I’m absolutely blessed to have hundreds of supporters, who … are willing to go out there each and every day and be in 100-degree weather and collect signatures,” Honkala says. “I think it just shows people are really tired of what’s happening right now, in regards to the housing crisis.” (more…)
