Green Party Nominations for Public Office, City Committee in February E-mail Print
Written by Webmaster
On Monday, February 26, the Green Party of Philadelphia will hold a General Membership meeting at which two important elections will occur.  First, members will vote on a new City Committee, the seven-member steering committee that represents GPOP on behalf of the General Membership.

The City Committee positions are: chair, recording secretary, membership secretary, treasurer, and three at-large postitions.  Currently, Christina Valente has been nominated for Chair.  Mike Rosenberg and Lewis Harris, Jr. have been nominated for Membership Secretary.  Alex Gillett has been nominated for Treasurer.  Esther Croft has been nominated for Recording Secretary.  Lew Harris, Jr. and Mike Rosenberg have also been nominated for at-large positions as have Charles Sherrouse.  Nominations will be accepted until just before the meeting.  To nominate someone for a position on the City Committee, email gpop@gpop.org.

Also at that meeting, members will decide whether to nominate candidates for public office for the upcoming municipal elections.  Currently, Lewis Harris, Jr. is seeking the Green Party nomination for City Commissioner.  The City of Philadelphia has three City Commissioners who are responsible for running and managing elections.  Only two of the three Commissioners can be of the same party.  Typically, this has meant two Democrats and one Republican.  However, a Green could unseat the Republican and be the third City Commissioner.

Brian Rudnick is seeking the nomination for City Council District 8 (NW Philadelphia).  This seat is currently occupied by Donna Reed Miller (D).  She was challenged in 2003 by Green Party candidate Tom Hutt.  Brian has also nominated Kerry Foster for Mayor.  Foster had previously been nominated and after accepting withdrew his nomination some weeks later.  If Foster accepts this second nomination, his candidacy may be voted on at this meeting or it may occur in March.  Green Party members in attendance will determine how to proceed.

Date: February 26, 2007
Location: Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square
Time: 6:30 PM
All are welcome to attend.  Only registered Greens may vote on party officers and candidates for public office.
